Artist Bio
Amy Canada was born in 1972 in Dallas, TX and currently resides and works in the southern part of the metroplex. Throughout her childhood and formative years, she excelled in both art and music. However, it was while taking art and music classes at a local community college that she decided to pursue music full time. And so, she went on to study music at William Paterson University, earning a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, and then a Master of Arts in Music Composition at SUNY Stony Brook. Although her main focus was on music, she continued painting and drawing during her school years and beyond. At a certain point however, composing music and doing art became activities of almost equal importance. To her delight, she discovered that music had taught her much about visual art. Her knowledge of form, harmony, and counterpoint informed her composition process in her paintings as well as her music pieces. Exploring both representational and abstract art she found that the same elements of music could be translated into visual elements of art, and visa versa.
And so she continues this interchangeability between art and music- as a dialogue between the world of sound and vision. At this point in her artistic journey, she maintains a distinction between her art and music as separate media. Currently focused on representational art, she finds that nature and other subject matter portrayed in her paintings become studies in form, tonality, harmonic relationships in color, textures, and contrasts in light and dark. These observations are made evident more abstractly in her music, as she searches for equivalent ways of expression in sonic imagery. For now, this method of exploring equivalency necessitates the isolation of her visual artwork from her musical work. In the future however, she envisions herself as an interdisciplinary artist combining music and visual art into a synthesis.
